Lau Kok Wa is a seasoned journalist with 40 years of experience in the Chinese news media, both the print and the electronic media, namely Sing Tao Daily News, Asia Television, and Cable TV. While retired from Cable TV, He became a Part-time Presenter of Radio Television Hong Kong until the end of December 2023. He is currently Part-time Researcher of Radio Television Hong Kong.
Lau is well-versed in Chinese writing and editing as well as in Hong Kong’s current affairs, having spent more than three decades in various newsrooms with the 22 years manning Cable TV’s news desk – the first round-the-clock Chinese television news service in Hong Kong – coordinating reporting assignments and supervising daily news output under extremely tight deadlines.
Over the years, Lau reported on and helped coordinate a huge number of major news events. Amongst many, the historic negotiations in Hong Kong between Beijing and Taipei representatives following the hijacking of a Chinese Airlines jet to China in 1986; the return of Hong Kong’s sovereignty to China in 1997; the World Trade Organization conference in Hong Kong in 2005; elections of HKSAR Chief Executives and members of the Legislative Council; and the numerous visits to Hong Kong by top Chinese leaders including Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, Xi Jinping, and most recently, Zhang Dejiang.
Lau is also a part-time lecturer at the Journalism Department of Shue Yan College, teaching Cantonese Intonation. He also taught news writing at Hong Kong Chu Hai College of Higher Education. In 2007, Lau undertook a Master programme in Chinese Linguistic Literature as a part-time student at the Jinan University in Guangzhou.
Prior to joining Cable TV, Lau spent 12 years working with ATV news, manning the assignment desk, editing news scripts and daily news bulletins. During that time, he worked concurrently at Sing Tao Daily, manning the night-time crime desk and working closely with editors in script writing and layout of local and international stories.
