Echoes of Ap Chau

Ho Tsun San Jansen

BA (Hons) in Journalism and Mass Communication 2024/25 (Year 4)

The documentary is about a tranquil island, Ap Chau, lying from the bustling city and still preserves its serenity, echoing the memories left by its islanders. Though the island is now deserted, traces of past life linger in the old school, church, and surroundings, whispering stories of the island's history like echoes.

Richard, a resident who returned after decades of migration, connects the past and present through his oral stories and life. This documentary portrays the interwoven tales of Ap Chau's past and present, guided by Richard, the island's only long-term resident. He shared the story of Ap Chau's and his childhood experiences, visiting the church and school, recalling past moments, documenting his daily life on the island, and capturing his trips to the city for daily necessities. Ultimately, it conveys his feelings about home on this isolated island. Through his perspective, the film delicately depicts the island's former vibrancy and current stillness, evoking memories that linger like echoes all around.

AI in Cantonese Pop Music Production

Tse Tze Yu Swing

BA (Hons) in Journalism and Mass Communication 2023/24 (Year 4)

This project examines how AI tools and platforms can be applied to music production—from generating melodies and lyrics to blending human and machine-made compositions. With a focus on Cantonese pop, the student created and compared four original tracks to analyse the strengths and limitations of AI-assisted music, offering insights into its future in the Hong Kong music scene.

What started as a simple experiment evolved into a comprehensive exploration, driven by curiosity and shaped through trial, error, and expert feedback. Despite challenges like unstable platforms and limited resources, the student's persistence led to a clearer understanding of how AI can empower creators and transform artistic workflows.
