Ng majored in Chinese literature in university, and developed a deep interest in pre-Qin classics, traditional literature, phonology, and philology.
Following graduation, he entered the journalism profession somewhat by accident as an apprentice. Ng has since served at a range of newspapers, magazines and websites in senior management positions, including as Executive Deputy Chief Editor at Oriental Daily, Chief Editor at The Sun, Editorial Consultant at 36.com, Chief Editor at Cup Magazine, and Editorial Controller at Sing Tao Daily and Headline Daily. Since the 1990s, Ng has witnessed the golden period of Hong Kong journalism, spanning close to three decades.
In recent years, Ng has focused in academic research and higher education, acting as mentor at the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong, and as lecturer at the Department of Chinese at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong. Additionally, he was also a guest speaker at media education workshops for secondary school students, held by the Hong Kong Journalism Education Fund.
Ng is currently a doctoral candidate at the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on media linguistics, pre-Qin paleography and epigraphy.
