Anderson Chan
(Graduated in 2013 with a Master’s degree in Journalism from Renmin University of China,
a programme jointly organized by Renmin University and Hong Kong Shue Yan University)
Anderson Chan’s career has always been intertwined with film and television production. In 1995, when he was in his second year of Shue Yan’s journalism programme, he had the first taste of working in a television environment as a tape operator and assistant director in the news department of Asia Television (ATV). In 2000, as the ATV news department was undergoing reform and development, he recommended himself to the management and took up a reporter role. With an instinct in breaking news coverage, this career shift paved the way for his journey to become a station reporter in the mainland.
Chan has since amassed a wealth of experience in carrying out reporting duties aboard. One of his most notable assignments was to cover the inauguration ceremony of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the second female president of the Philippines. With the help of senior colleagues, he learnt to adapt to the fast-changing environment as a Hong Kong reporter working aboard, swiftly connect with overseas Chinese communities for interviews, and efficiently compile daily overseas news segments for programmes including News Magazine. The dynamic nature of the news industry has been instrumental in broadening his professional horizons.
In 2012, Chan briefly left ATV to join Roadshow, a company specializing in mobile multimedia information platforms, as Director of Program Content. In this role, he contributed to the production of “Go Beyond Hong Kong”, a programme which involved filming in various countries worldwide.
He returned to ATV in 2013 and was subsequently promoted to Vice President of the News Department. During ATV’s final challenging period, he remained committed to providing accurate daily news reports until the station ceased operations.
In 2018, Chan joined Cable TV’s Program Department, where he produced various current affairs programmes on topics including innovation and technology. Later, he moved to the News Department and was responsible for the planning of special programmes related to the Greater Bay Area. Chan currently serves as the HEAD of Public Affairs at i-Cable Communications Limited, and continues to explore directions in film and television production for viewers.
Anderson's message:
“From Shue Yan to the TV news industry, it is my ‘resilient’ and ‘uncomplaining’ nature that got me through numerous challenges. I firmly believe that if you work hard for opportunities without worrying about personal gains and losses, like-minded people will appear at crucial moments to support you. Looking back on my time in the ATV news department, it was the harmonious atmosphere that allowed everyone to go the extra mile in producing well-recognized news stories even under extremely limited resources - one such example was the celebrity interview program ‘Hong Kong 100 VIPS’. I hope that Shue Yan graduates can find their unique path to growth and shine brightly in their respective media fields.”
