In the January edition of SYUJC Newsletter, JC alumni Philip Kwong, of class 2017, shared with our current students about his journey to transform himself from a journalist to a public affairs and communications specialist for Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The newsletter also reported on our latest internship workshop and JMC Talks.

The research team of Chinese Martial Arts and Sports Culture Communication, a project led by Associate Professor Dr. Lee Ka Man, was delighted to release its findings to members of the public on January 27, 2024. The research tracked how local and overseas Chinese martial arts masters break through territorial boundaries over the past few decades to inherit the skills and essence through mass communication, interpersonal communication, and organizational communication. The project also demonstrated the use of cutting-edge technology such as artificial intelligence in the modern artistry of Chinese martial arts.

In conjunction with the release of findings, the research team of Chinese Martial Arts and Sports Culture Communication also hosted an extended exhibition at the Jockey Club Multimedia Production Centre in Braemar Hill campus. The exhibition showcased familiar training tools of Chinese Martial Arts, as well as precious historical documents from Hong Kong’s Ving Tsun and Tai Chi grandmasters. Students, teachers and members of the public were invited to the exhibition, spanning between January 27 and February 3, 2024.

The Department hosted the JMC Talk on January 9, 2024 with Rev. Dominic Chan and artist Jennifer Yu joining us as guest speakers. The event, themed “The Art of Effective Organizational Communication”, was attended by more than 100 students in our Braemar Hill campus. Rev. Chan, who founded “Catholic Artistes”, stressed the importance of friendship in the development of any organization.

In the December edition of SYUJC Newsletter, President of SYUJC Radio Cecilia Kwokshared how our journalism and communication students established their presence from live streaming to podcast programmes over the course of 15 years, and what they are looking forward in 2024. The newsletter also reported on our activities at the JMC Info Day.

Co-organized by the Department of Journalism and Communication and the student-led Editorial Board, the JC Fest 2023 features our students’ exploratory works in the form of photograph, documentary and reportage over the past year. An opening ceremony was held on December 11, 2023, and the exhibition was opened to fellow students and members of the public.

The Department invited startup specialist Arthur Chan, founder and CEO of Snowball Asia, to share his experiences as a professional manager and entrepreneur in our last JMC Talk of the year. Chan began his career in global supply chain management in a Chinese factory, before reinventing himself as a pioneer of internet marketing and most recently, a specialist to help tech startups to grow. The event on Dec 5, 2023 was attended by more than 100 students.

Newly released fact-based drama “In Broad Daylight” reveals a little-known truth about residential care homes for the disabled hiding beneath the headlines with the help of a news organization’s investigative journalism unit. Our latest internship workshop on November 21, 2023, invited director and screenwriter Lawrence Kan and his co-screenwriters Li Cheuk-fung and Tong Chui-ping to the campus to share with students how the film was inspired by solid journalistic works.

Award-winning JC alumni Leung Man-hei, who graduated this year, was invited to be one of the speakers in the World Press Photo Exhibition Talk on November 19, 2023. In the talk, he shared his experiences in an earlier photojournalism workshop in the US, a sponsored trip following his double award success in the prestigious College Photographer of the Year competition (COPY) last year.

The Department welcomes our prospective students to the annual Info Day with specialist events that cover our various research initiatives and programme collaboration. All on the same day, they included the release of project results of “Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage and IPMAN Ving Tsun” sponsored by Tin Ka Ping Foundation, the premiere of themed documentary “Boundless: Chinese Martial Arts”, the release of study findings: “Social media addiction, coping strategies and psychological wellbeing of Hong Kong citizens”, and a seminar to introduce our academic programmes and to explore future collaboration.

The Department’s teaching staff and current students set up booths to chat with prospective students in the annual HKSYU Info Day at our Braemar Hill campus on November 19, 2023. The event also marked the premiere of the documentary “Boundless: Chinese Martial Arts”, part of our research initiatives to explore how Chinese martial arts thrive in Hong Kong as an intangible cultural and sport activity.

The November edition of SYUJC Newsletter welcomes the incoming editorial team of “Our Voice”, a long-running student publication and part of our on-campus internship. President xxx said the team is ready to pick up the baton and all prepared for new publications in the upcoming academic year. The newsletter also reported on the production of the Department’s new promo video.

We have Assistant Professor Ken Chu Tsz-hang, who joined our Department this academic year, sharing with us his thoughts about the potential of AI in teaching and learning. He hopes the newly introduced HKSYU ChatGPT chatbot can prepare students to become ethical digital learners with AI literacy. The newsletter also reported on our warm welcome to freshmen at the start of the semester.

SYUJC Radio, one of the on-campus internship options for our journalism and communication students, held its first production workshop for the new academic year. Guided by seasoned mentor and JC alumni Calvin Lam, almost 30 new blood – including one from MDIT programme for the first time – are expected to deliver a variety of programmes on the airwaves by the end of the year.

Wong Pui-lam, a member of Hong Kong beach volleyball team in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, joined our class in Sports Communication on Oct 11, 2023 and shared his first-hand experiences in the event. It was part of the Department’s teaching and learning initiatives as students took the chance to engage in discussions on sports development in Hong Kong.

Eric Yeung, Founding President of Esports Association Hong Kong, joined us at the first JMC Talk of this academic year to shed lights on the future of E-sports on September 30, 2023. Eric noted that Shanghai is now positioned as a hub of the global E-sports industry, attracting both talents and capitals into the sport and generating cash flow on a scale that is never seen before.

Congratulations to three researchers at the Department of Journalism and Communication whose respective projects have been granted a total of more than HK$2 million in funding in the 10th round of Competitive Research Funding Schemes under the University Grants Committee.

The project “Court news in the post-national security law Hong Kong: Examining the significance and journalistic roles, production, and contents of protests-/ politics-related court news”, led by Assistant Professor Dennie Leung, received funding of about HK$850,000. Another project led by Assistant Professor Dr. Grace Zhang, “Does Corporate Sociopolitical Activism Oriented Market Exits Benefit Corporate Brand Equity and Firm Profitability? Evidence from Corporate Exodus from Russia amidst the 2022 Russo-Ukrainian War”, has been awarded more than HK$625,000. Both projects are awarded under the Faculty Development Scheme (FDS).

The research team led by Assistant Professor Crispy Tong was granted funding from the Inter-Institutional Development Scheme (IIDS) for the project “Reviewing digital technology-driven marketing communications and future research directions: A cross-disciplinary dialogue between academics and practitioners”. It received funding of more than HK$560,000.

In the latest alumni newsletter, JC alumni Ryan Fung shared with us his journey to become a researcher in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) following a career in financial journalism and public relations. Fung was also a winner of Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Awards for his two books in ESG.

Recently published a new book on the city’s popular fiction tradition in the 1950s and 1960s, Professor Peter Wong Chung-ming met with the readers at Hong Kong Book Fair 2023 to share about his research journey that began with his PhD study on Hong Kong’s unique “saam kap dai (三及第)” writing style. His most recent publication is at the pinnacle of his decades-long research work during which he devoted much time and resources to revisit Hong Kong’s newspaper archives.

Congratulations to Head of Department Dr. Kaman Lee and fellow alumna Vicky Pang for winning the 2023 Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Awards. Published by Joint Publishing (HK), they co-authored two books namely “Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage and IPMAN Ving Tsun - Wah in action (香港非遺與葉問詠春：阿樺出拳)” and “Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage and IPMAN Ving Tsun – Wah’s secret (香港非遺與葉問詠春：阿樺秘笈)”, as part of Dr. Lee’s research on the communications of Chinese martial arts.

In the latest alumni newsletter, esteemed JC alumni and part-time Senior Lecturer Vicky Wong Wai-kit told us his journey to become a film director began with his frantic love of George Lucas’ Star Wars series. From that he learns to “play seriously” and realises one needs “passion, mission and vision” to excel. The newsletter also reported on our latest teaching and learning initiatives.

One of a handful journalism historians in Hong Kong, Professor Peter Wong Chung-ming published the second book in a series which detailed the city’s popular fiction tradition. The new book revisited local newspaper archives in the period between 1950 and 1969 and filled in the missing pieces of Hong Kong’s literary studies. Prof. Wong also discussed his research at Hong Kong Book Fair 2023.

Students from our BA(Hons) in Media Design and Immersive Technology (MDIT) programme will be offered yet another opportunity to apply their skills and techniques in new Semester. The research project of Chinese Martial Arts and Sports Culture Communication, spearheaded by Dr. Kaman Lee, is recruiting MDIT students to take part in designing a virtual “Kuen Kwoon” (Ving Tsun martial arts school) for primary and secondary students.

A three-day training camp for Chinese Martial Arts and Sports Culture Communication was concluded on July 6, 2023 with hundreds of secondary school students enjoying their first taste of university life at Shue Yan campus. The activities included Tai Chi class, an introduction to virtual Ving Tsun martial arts, as well as workshops and seminars on photography, filmmaking and social media.

We have Associate Professor Dr. Lau Kung-wong, also the Director of Virtual Reality Laboratory, sharing with us the joys of slow cycling in the latest alumni newsletter. An amateur bike racer, Dr. Lau started the sport with much fascination in pace but he gradually learnt to appreciate the sights on the countryside by going slower. The newsletter also reported on our latest teaching and learning initiatives.

Dr. Grace Xiao ZHANG, an Assistant Professor from the Department of Journalism and Communication at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, attended the 2023 International Communication Association (ICA) Annual Conference held in Toronto, Canada, at the end of May.

The latest edition of alumni newsletter features JMC alumni Henry Fong, who develops his career in the e-sport industry after a stint in journalism. The 2015 graduate started as a technology reporter before switching to gaming tech company Razer. The newsletter also reported on our latest teaching and learning initiatives.

The Department has established a new platform for student filmmakers to exhibit their works and receive feedback from industry professionals. We are delighted to have invited award-winning Hong Kong filmmakers, including director Vicky Wong Wai-kit and Ho Cheuk-tin, and screenwriter Mak Tin-shu, to the JMC Drama 2022-23 Showcase and Exchange on 22nd May 2023, in which they shared their first-hand experiences in cinematography.

In the latest edition of our alumni newsletter, Assistant Professors Dr. Dennis Leung and Dr. Grace Zhang shared the fond memories about our late colleague Dr. Liang Jingwen, who sadly passed away last month.

Our student-led Editorial Board has once again passed the batons in the inauguration ceremony held at Lady Lily Shaw Hall on April 20, 2023. The four branches, the EB Executive Committee, Our Voice, Shuo Online and SYUJC Radio, have all been injected new blood and energy to lead our on-campus internship to fulfil students’ ever more diversified career interests and aspirations.

As part of our teaching and learning initiatives, students enrolled in News Reporting and Writing in Chinese II were offered the opportunity to work with the editorial term of popular online news portal HK01 on Apr 14, 2023. Students have been able to witness first-hand the digital news cycle and learnt how to make crucial new judgments in a fast-paced news environment.

The latest edition of our alumni newsletter featured Assistant Professor Dr. Keith Tsui’s recollection of his first attempt to complete a marathon 10 years ago. He remembered his legs were going to fall off mid-race into 32km but at the end managed to drag his feet to the finishing line by mental strength. The newsletter also reported on our latest internship workshops and the JMC Talk.

To prepare our new batch of interns for the upcoming summer, the SYMediaLab interviewed the chairman of Strategic Public Relations Group Mr. Richard Tsang, also an academic advisor to our Department. Mr Tsang, one of the most respected PR gurus in Hong Kong, told our students that the essential qualities to become a good PR are having the right mind and the right attitude.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Liang Jingwen, an esteemed assistant professor in the Department of Journalism and Communication at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Dr. Liang was a dedicated and passionate scholar,researcher, and colleague who made significant contributions to our university community and will be dearly missed.

Members of the university management visited Dr. Liang at the hospital over the past weeks. The University offered the deepest condolences to Dr. Liang’s family at this sad time.

Dr. Liang was the Head of Data Analytics and Survey Research Center, dedicated to promoting research in data analysis. Despite her illness, Dr. Liang showed unwavering commitment to her work and continued to inspire in teaching and research. She was cherished dearly by all those who knew her at the Department of Journalism and Communication.

The JMC Talk on March 14, 2023 invited Dr. Chloe Lai, Head of Integer Urban Sustainability at the Oval Partnership to share with our students about promoting her cause through moving images. Dr. Lai was a producer and co-director of a documentary The Limbo of A Plastic Bottle. A former journalist, she devoted her career in NGOs over the past decade and reinvented herself as an urbanist focusing on sustainability.

In the latest edition of our alumni newsletter, Assistant Professor Dr. Grace Zhang heaped praise on our first-year journalism students who demonstrated a good understanding to media and society, and showed great potential and enthusiasm in news production. Only six months into their freshmen year, they have already managed to create news clips on their own social media platforms.

The second internship workshop this year addressed the future of public relations, with veteran public relations specialist and part-time senior lecturer Dr. Quinton Chan sharing in person the top PR trends that would dominate the industry this year. The workshop was well-received by the students as PR continues to be a popular career option for our graduates.

More than 100 journalism students enrolled in our first internship workshop this year with the K11 Art Foundation Learning & Engagement Team sharing with us in a live webinar on how a non-profit art organisation could foster the development of contemporary art through exhibitions, artist residencies, and educational programmes. Our students were eager to learn about the career opportunities in the art industry as well as the upcoming art programmes.

In the latest edition of our alumni newsletter, Professor of Practice Wong Chung-ming Peter told an interesting anecdote of himself taking up traditional Chinese musical instruments when he was young. It also featured the JC Fest 2022, an annual showcase of our students’ passion and efforts in journalistic works.

A research paper on Covid-19 misinformation co-authored by Assistant Professor Dr. Grace Zhang from HKSYU, Prof. Ran Wei from CUHK and Prof. Jack Qiu from NTU Singapore was awarded the Best Paper of the Year by Communication & Society, an Affiliate Journal of International Communication Association (ICA), top-tier TSSCI journal. The paper, entitled Knowledge, Negative Emotion and the Third-person Effect of Covid-19 Misinformation: A Study in Singapore, provided a perspective for understanding the Covid-19 infodemics. Congratulations to Dr. Zhang!

Our Department are honoured to have Chief Secretary Eric Chan joining us as the guest speaker of the first JMC Talk of the year on January 17, 2023. Mr. Chan, a Shue Yan sociology alumnus, shared with hundreds of students the key initiatives in the government’s Youth Development Blueprint. He also took the opportunity to join a campus tour and visited the Virtual Reality Laboratory at the Research Complex, and attended a sharing session with fellow sociology juniors.

The latest edition of our alumni newsletter featured the new year wish from Assistant Professor Dr. Crispy Tong, who also took the opportunity to congratulate the new batch of graduates. The Department has also launched another teaching and learning project in December which took our students to the Cyberport to learn about the e-Sports industry and its ecosystem.

In the latest edition of our alumni newsletter, Associate Head of Department Lam Wun-sum offered his own light touch review of the University’s café and restaurants over the past years. Meanwhile, the Department has launched another teaching and learning project in collaboration with the research on the Chinese Martial Arts and Sports Culture Communication, with 38 students participated in interviews with Ving Tsun grandmasters.

As part of the research project for the Chinese Martial Arts and Sports Culture Communication, the Department took the opportunity to collaborate with Ving Tsun Athletic Association to showcase precious exhibits from Ving Tsun Grandmaster Ip Man and his apprentices over the past decades. The exhibition was opened to public from Nov 8 to 19 at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Participants were able to join a virtual journey to go back to the old premise where the grandmasters hosted classes.

The much-anticipated academic conference of The Chinese Martial Arts and Sports Culture Communication was successfully concluded at Hong Kong Shue Yan University on Nov 8, 2022 with leading researchers and industry veterans presenting their works and exchanging stimulating ideas on the subject. The conference is part of the research project spearheaded by Department Head Dr. Kaman Lee. Dr Sam Lam, Ms Jenny Li and Mr Vincent Ho are Co-Investigators.

Congratulations to final year journalism student Leung Man-hei who scoops double award success in the prestigious College Photographer of the Year competition (COPY). His photo series “The COVID Cycle of Hong Kong” won the gold award in the Domestic Picture Story category and an award of excellence in the General News category. The competition, founded in 1945, is open to college students worldwide.

Associate Head of Department Edgar So shared on the latest edition of our alumni newsletter about catching the trend in media and communications in big data and immersive technology. The Department has launched the new BA-MDIT programme since last year to build for future media education.

A big round of applause to students who received the Henderson Warmth Foundation Communication Scholarship on October 15, 2022. The awards, in its 6th edition since 2019, are given to the best student works in audio-visual storytelling, commentary, explanatory reporting and news photography. It is jointly organized by the Henderson Warmth Foundation, SYMediaLab and our department.

Congratulations to 11 students from the Department of Journalism and Communication who were placed on the President’s List for their distinguished academic achievement over the past year. They were among the 108 students across the University who received the awards from Deputy President Dr. Hu Fai-chung in the ceremony on October 14, 2022.

Ms. Katty Yeung, Co-owner and Head of Group Corporate Communications and Marketing Communications of HKBN Group, shared with hundreds of students about her experiences as a public relations specialist in the JMC Talk on October 14, 2022. A former conference interpreter, Ms. Yeung reinvented herself as a marketing and communications professional and served in various industries.

To better connect our alumni networks with current students, the Department has unveiled a new monthly newsletter, the SYUJC Newsletter, starting this September.
It is available online on the last Monday of every month, covering the most updated news and events of the Department as well as student activities.

Mr. Edgar So, Associate Head of Department and Director of BA-MDIT programme, published an article on SYMediaLab about the preparation of Hong Kong’s first VR showcase on media ethics this July. Mr. So shared the details on how the idea was first floated and how we overcame the challenges during its implementation, which brought industry professionals and college students to real-world live reporting scenario through an immersive learning experience.

Mr. Derek Zen, Chairman of Road King Infrastructure, was invited to be our guest speaker at the first JMC Talk of this semester. A member of the bridge team that won Hong Kong a silver medal in the 2018 Asian Games at Jakarta, Mr. Zen hoped the government could take the lead in promoting sports culture in the city, starting from the very first stage of land planning. About 100 journalism students joined the talk at the Jockey Club Multimedia Production Centre on September 20, 2022.

JMC students were given a briefing session on September 13, 2022 to learn about the revamped course structure this year, and the arrangements over on-campus internships – one of our signature features of the JMC programme. Department head Dr. Kaman Lee, stream leaders and other instructors were there to receive questions from students.

The Department of Journalism and Communication welcomes our new batch of freshmen on August 23, 2022. More than 100 young faces who joined us at Lady Lily Shaw Hall for the University’s opening ceremony and the Orientation Day showed much eagerness in taking up the challenges in the next four years as they prepared themselves to become professionals in the field of media and communications.

The student-led Editorial Board of our Department hosted one of the much-anticipated events of the year – the Orientation Camp at Yuen Long Tai Tong Holiday Camp – to give our freshmen a warm welcome to university life. A dozen alumni also joined and shared their experiences with the new faces. Amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the event has vigorously followed the health guidelines.

As part of a two-year research project funded by Dorothy Shen Wong Journalism Education Fund, the Department on July 8, 2022 introduced the first virtual reality showcase in our campus. Students and guests were brought to the real-world live reporting scenario (a fire scene) through an immersive learning experience, in which they would need to make ethical news judgments. The showcase serves as an essential component of our journalism education to promote media literacy.

We are delighted to have veteran journalist Prof. Raymond R. Wong, also the founder of Dorothy Shen Wong Journalism Education Fund, as our guest speaker in the “Media Literacy Master Talk” seminar. Speaking to a full house comprising media practitioners and secondary students on July 8, 2022, Prof. Wong shared how he dealt with ethical problems and norms in decades of news practices.

The seminar was part of a two-year research project spearheaded by Dr. Kaman Lee to promote media literacy and ethics. The project also includes a digital archive to record the history of TV news in Hong Kong, the filming of a documentary, and a VR showcase of media ethics through an immersive learning experience.

A big congratulations to Year 3 journalism student Leung Man-hei, who won the first prize in the prestigious photo competition “Focus at the Frontline 2021” in the capacity of freelance photographer. Leung’s work, captioned “A man farewells his family before moving to Canada”, won the biggest award in the general news section. The competition was organized by Hong Kong Press Photographers Association and first began in 1993.

The University signed a memorandum of understanding with Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) on May 13, 2022 to offer internships and on-the-job training for students enrolled in Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Journalism and Mass Communication and Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Media Design and Immersive Technology. The collaboration aims to strengthen the local digital talent pool in media design, immersive technologies and visual production.

We have invited Mr. Benson Luk, a lawmaker and the Chief Strategy Officer of the Chairman’s Office at Lai Sun Group, as our guest speaker in the last JMC talk of this semester on April 12, 2022. Mr. Luk shared his thoughts on the problems faced by younger generations today and how the government could build trust with the youth. Hundreds of students jointed the talk via live webinar.

We are delighted to have Ms. Fiona Wan, the Corporate Communication Director of New World Development, joining us at the JMC Talk live webinar on March 1, 2022. Ms. Wan, a veteran professional in communication who had worked in journalism, the government and corporate communications, shared with hundreds of students on her experiences to stay ahead of emerging crises.

Mr. Coba Cheng, who made his directorial debut in humorous Chinese New Year film “Chilli Laugh Story”, shared with hundreds of students about his experiences in the JMC Talk live webinar on February 8, 2022. Starting his career as a DJ, Mr. Cheng developed his own entrepreneurial story to become a cross-media creator and the founder of his own chilli sauce brand during the pandemic.

The last JMC Talk of this semester is delighted to have Mr. Timothy Cheng, the host of RTHK’s longstanding program “Music Lover”, join us on December 7, 2021, to share about the “slashie” nature of his showbiz career that spanned close to three decades. The talk has drawn a full house at the Jockey Club Multimedia Production Centre while hundreds of students also joined the live webinar.

Nov 5-6

BJMC alumni returned to the campus on November 5 and 6, 2021 to share about their career pathways in various fields including film production, public relations and news media. The Info Day, welcoming secondary students, parents and teachers, also included a broad range of activities such as campus tour, student sharing and live performance. The sharing talks held physically at the university research complex were live streamed to accommodate the pandemic situation.

New Martial Hero Magazine proprietor Ms Wan Shuk Chun and editor Mr. Gary Wong were invited to the JMC Talk on November 2, 2021, to share their strategies to leverage the digital world to promote martial arts. Mr. Andy Leung, the head coach of the Practical Shaolin Martial Art Society, also joined us to discuss the future trends in martial arts training in Hong Kong.

We are delighted to collaborate with the Hong Kong Institute of Professional Photographers (HKIPP) this October to host the Master Class of Commercial Photography for journalism students. Participants are offered the chances to follow the footsteps of real professionals to master the subjects, craft the concepts and create stunning images in four training modules.

Veteran journalist and dedicated educator Prof. Raymond R. Wong, also an adjunct professor of our department, delivered a guest lecture for journalism students on October 7, 2021 to discuss one of the most quintessential questions: “What is journalism?”. The lecture was well-received by Year 2 and Year 3 students who aspire to forge a career in the industry after graduation.

Our first JMC Talk of this academic year has invited infectious disease specialist Dr. Joseph KY Tsang to share with us the gist in the process of health communication amid the ongoing Covid pandemic. From vaccine applications to public health strategies, hundreds of students joined the discussion via webinar or in person at the Jockey Club Multimedia Production Centre on September 7, 2021.

As part of the Ving Tsun Martial Arts research project, Dr. Kaman Lee hosted the second seminar on August 28, 2021, on the application of artificial intelligence in martial arts study. Simon Ngai, the executive producer of RTHK programme “Kung Fu Quest”, and Jerry Yeung, the host of the same programme, were among the seminar speakers who shared about their experiences to introduce martial arts in a documentary.

We are delighted to welcome more than 100 freshmen joining us at the Department of Journalism and Communication this September. At the opening ceremony held at Lady Lily Shaw Hall on August 23, 2021, we were thrilled by the young faces who showed much eagerness and willingness to kick start their unique journey as a university student in the forthcoming years.

With the new academic year fast approaching, our teaching personnel joined together on August 18, 2021 to review the departmental strategic plans. The university’s senior management, including Academic VP Prof. Catherine Sun, Associate VP Prof. SK Cheung, Associate Academic VP Prof. Selina Chan, and Associate Academic VP Dr. Yew Foong Hui, also joined the event to elaborate on the core strategies and new directions of the university in the next five years.

Two research projects on Ving Tsun Martial Arts, both led by Dr. Kaman Lee, were recently granted funding from the Innovation and Technology Fund and the Tin Ka Ping Foundation. The projects will separately investigate the transformation of martial arts with the aid of artificial intelligence; and create illustrations on how Ving Tsun developed into an intangible cultural heritage in Hong Kong. To kick off the projects, Ving Tsun grandmasters were invited to share their legacy in a seminar held on August 07, 2021.

On July 14, 2021, our assistant professor Dr. Anthony Lam presented his latest findings on Relationship between Korean Language and Chiuchowese as part of the study that sought to connect the Korean language with different Chinese dialects. Fr. Isaac Noh of Korean Missionary Society was also invited as a speaker to discuss the key elements of modern Korean language.

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new undergraduate degree programme – BA (Hons) in Media Design and Immersive Technology (MDIT) – starting this September! This programme equips students with professional knowledge and techniques in immersive technologies, and helps them develop analytical, critical and ethical thinking abilities for future VR/AR market, research study and start-up.

Our final JMC Talk of this academic year was delighted to have invited six leading commercial photographers in town to the Jockey Club Multimedia Production on April 13, 2021. The speakers, all of them from the Hong Kong Institute of Professional Photographers (HKIPP), shared with hundreds of students their visions and experiences in the client-serving field of the industry.

Hong Kong Shue Yan University is delighted to be the first local tertiary institution to partner with CNN Academy to host a one-week journalism training course in early March. A total of 17 journalism students were selected to join the CNN Bootcamp at our campus at Braemar Hill, where they learnt one of the best industry practices in news production, broadcasting and visual storytelling. Certificates were awarded to students upon completion of the modules.

Our long-standing internship programme is set to resume this summer as we look forward to having more than 180 placement opportunities from media organizations, public relations firms, non-governmental organizations and public bodies. On March 9, 2021, the department hosted an internship briefing session via live webinar to provide the latest updates on internship application and remind students of the professional expectations in the workplace.

Two of our journalism alumni, Mr. Lap Wong and Mr. Ken Law, returned to the campus at Braemar Hill as guest speakers at JMC Talk on March 2, 2021. Graduated more than a decade ago, both speakers are now taking up senior roles at fashion publication ELLEMEN, which they transformed the magazine title to an online multimedia portal. Hundreds of current students also attended the live webinar as they raised questions about the opportunities and challenges in the industry’s future.

Hong Kong Shue Yan University is extremely grateful to have received a HK$5 million donation from veteran journalist and dedicated educator Prof. Raymond R. Wong, SBS, to promote media literacy and ethics through the newly established Dorothy Shen Wong Journalism Education Fund.

Media veterans, academics and the Police Public Relations Branch were invited to our JMC Talk live webinar on December 1, 2020 to exchange ideas on press freedom and the future roles and responsibilities of journalists under the new accreditation policy enforced by the police. Hundreds of students also joined the online event through our web portal.

Veteran financial PR specialist Mr. Thomas Chan joined our JMC Talk live webinar on November 3, 2020 to share with journalism students his wealth of experience in a dedicated career that first began as a financial journalist, before moving onto in-house PR, and then setting up his own PR firm specializing in financial and public affairs.

About 100 journalism students joined the JMC Talk at the Jockey Club Multimedia Production Centre on October 06, 2020, with veteran commercial photographer Mr. Felix So (Ex-president of HKIPP) sharing his experiences in a career that has spanned more than two decades.

The Department of Journalism and Communication kicked off our new series of JMC Talk with Mr. Kiwi Chow (director of romantic psychodrama Beyond the Dream and 2016 Hong Kong Film Awards best picture Ten Years) sharing with journalism students at the Jockey Club Multimedia Production Centre on Tuesday.

More than 100 new undergraduate admissions in 2020 joined together for the first time in the department’s orientation day at Lady Lily Shaw Hall. Behind the face masks are young faces who show their eagerness and willingness to take up the challenges in the next four years, and to prepare themselves to become professionals in the media and communication field.
